Giving Thanks Every Day

Gratitude with a Side of Self-Reflection

Thanksgiving is a chance to gather with loved ones, indulge in delicious food, and reflect on all we have to be grateful for. But what if we didn’t wait until November to express our gratitude? What if we made giving thanks an everyday habit?

The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude transforms how we experience life. Studies show that practicing gratitude can:

  • Improve mental health by reducing stress and fostering positive emotions.

  • Strengthen relationships as it helps us express appreciation for others.

  • Enhance physical health by improving sleep and reducing inflammation.

  • Build resilience by shifting our focus from what’s lacking to what we have.

The Ripple Effect of Gratitude

When we practice gratitude, we inspire others to do the same. A kind word, a heartfelt “thank you,” or a moment of recognition can brighten someone’s day. Gratitude has a way of multiplying—it spreads, creating a culture of appreciation and joy.

Gratitude Every Day

Here are simple ways to cultivate thankfulness every day, all year long:

1. Start a Gratitude Journal

Write down three things you’re thankful for each day. They don’t have to be big—maybe it’s the aroma of coffee in the morning, a hug from a loved one, or a moment of peace during a busy day. The more you practice this, the more gratitude you’ll experience.

2. Practice Mindful Appreciation

Pause to notice the beauty around you—the colors of the changing leaves, the sound of laughter, or the coziness of your favorite chair. Being present helps you savor life’s simple pleasures.

3. Express It

Tell people you’re thankful for them. Write a note, send a text, or simply say it out loud. Letting others know they’re appreciated strengthens your bond and spreads positivity. You’ll notice it coming back to you, too.

4. Reframe Challenges

Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” or “What’s another way to approach this?” Pausing and reflecting can often help open your mind to ideas and deeper understandings.

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Don’t wait for big milestones to celebrate. Whether it’s finishing a task, making time for self-care, or having a good conversation, take a moment to feel proud and thankful. If you folded and put the laundry away – you are a rockstar!

 Happy Thanksgiving!

I am grateful for motherhood (look at that cutie patootie!!!), family, friends, my home, my health, quiet moments with coffee, and the ability to express myself creatively. I am thankful for everyone who has been there for me, put up with my antics, and dealt with my neurosis to be practically perfect (damn Mary Poppins and her prim and proper look accented by an adorable hat and petticoat - Julie Andrews and Jane Fonda, my two ladies, you have hindered my ability to accept reality and I will always love you all the more for it).

I’m grateful that that cutie patootie is a rockstar in her own right!

I am also viscerally grateful for hoodies and flannel - thank you Gen X. :)
